Culling your saved seeds -- good idea?

I recently did an experiment with some bean seeds I was saving from the 2012 garden for the 2013 planting.

After shelling the dried pods and sorting through the collected seeds, I (of course) removed all of the weak looking seeds -- off color, shriveled, etc. Just taking away the weakest of the pack I figured.

Well, I decided to do a germination test on all of the seeds I was going to throw away. 4 days later, I had a 90% plus germination rate - and they looked pretty strong.

So, I guess the moral of the story is not to judge the seeds you sow -- they may be ugly, but still viable.
