Sometimes (or a lot of times)bush beans send up a short runner. When that happens, I put a pole in the ground next to it about 30 inches high. The little runner will twist itself around it. You may have to help it get started. Bean vines go counterclockwise. Some bush varieties are less brawny than others and will flop over when the bean pods start growing. I use forked branches, or cut-down cheap tomato cages to prop them up. You don't want the nice beans down in the dirt. Watching things grow and "helping" mommy in the garden is a wonderful gift to give your children. You could try growing a Red Robin tomato in a pot for them. They get about 20ish inches high and across and have small, tasty fruit. If it gets down into the 40s, you can just move the pot into shelter.

I will not yank them out of the ground them. I did put 3 skinny bamboo stakes to help them out. Do you know about how long the runner will get?

Plus there is this BEAUTIFUL moth that keeps coming around depositing yellow eggs on the plants. I pick them off because when I had the poles beans, I am assuming that was the reason they had so many caterpillars! I don't believe in chemical pesticides, so I am out picking and squishing ALOT!

I've never grown TenderPod, but I shouldn't think it would be more than 3ft. at the most. Some "bush" beans are mis-named,in my opinion, and go to 5-6ft.

They kept on going and I decided to just snip the tops off. I've already got flowers and little beans growing. I am also out everyday picking those Butterfly eggs off to avoid the caterpillars :-)
