Cowpeas and mice/vole/some critter damage?

I was abysmally unsuccessful with cowpeas this year. I grew them under cover so I could save seed. Unfortunately, something small got under the tulle cover and chewed all the unripe beans (peas) out of the pods as they formed. They did not touch the regular beans right next to the cowpeas. They just love cowpeas (good taste). Has anyone had this happen? Do you know what it was? If mice, will they be repelled by mole-away castor oil product like voles?

No cowpeas for me :(

Could be voles, or chipmunks; I've had both damage legumes that way. Either will continue to "harvest" the seed until it is gone, or until you stop them. I place mouse traps in the area at the first sign of damage, it usually puts an end to it.

Never tried using repellents, so I can't vouch for their effectiveness.
