Letting beans freeze on vines

Because of the weird weather the beans were late, then we had an early frost scare, and I picked some beans that I wanted for seed early, maybe too early. Now we are having a hot Indian Summer week and I could have let them go.

Is it ok to leave beans on the vine through a frost, if you want to get dry beans from them? Will the beans still be viable? What if they are not mature yet, will they go on to produce seed after an overnight frost?

Don't know the answer, but I sympathize and want to know this too! I was thinking I'd leave beans go and get mature until we get a good frost, then harvest for seed.

A frost may be OK. A hard freeze, no, unless they are completely dry.

Andy, if the beans are drying down, they'll probably take a light frost without a problem. As mentioned above, it's the hard freeze which really does them in. And, bean seed on the vine can still take a hard freeze, as long as it is totally dry.
