Factors affecting seed bean production

I've let beans mature this year so I can save seeds for next year. I've always bought seeds before. Some of my seeds look great. Others of the same varieity have irregular shapes, wrinkling, markedly smaller size, cracked seed coats, etc. Overall, I'm pleased with what I have but would like to know if there are things I should be doing to up the percentage of great looking seed....I'm assuming the best looking is the most viable which may be a wrong assumption. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that.

The wrinkling is the condition I'm most curious about. I'm guessing the size, irregular shape, and cracked seed coats are mostly due to a summer of alternating dry and very wet times. Again, feel free to correct me if that is wrong. But the wrinkling is a puzzle to me.

Also, do the odd looking ones typically grow into inferior plants? And do the experts here still get some odd ones along with the good ones?
