Saving Bean Seeds

I keep reading that when you save seeds for multiple generations you need to have upwards of twenty plants represented each season or your seeds will become unviable. Is that true for beans?

Here's what I don't understand about that. Beans self-pollinate within the flower and seldom cross. So the bean I plant this year was self-pollinated in it's parent, which was self-pollinated in its parent, and so on. So why do I need multiple plants? Seems like one plant can continue the line forever.
