Wonderlites

Has anyone here used Wonderlites? I've read some posts on the orchid forum about them. I do have one set up at the end of a table to supplement my HID light that doesn't really reach that far. I'm considering more to replace my crappy shoplights.

RE: Wonderlites

The 160W screw-in bulb? Nice pretty light source, but horrendously inefficient. If you feel the need for a wide spectrum white light on your plants then you should look at fluorescents which have a CRI of 90+, for example a 950 or 965 tube. Unless you don't pay the utility bulbs of course, then you don't care how much electricity you use. And of course if you don't mind paying $70 for a bulb that produces the same light as a $10 fluorescent tube ;)

A single four-foot fluorescent tube will produce the same light output as the 160W wonderlite. If you want a screw-in solution, look for about 50W-worth of compact fluorescents. High CRI versions are hard to find, but they do exist. Expect to pay around $15 for a 42W spiral. Buyer beware though, there are people marketing "full spectrum", "wide spectrum" or "SAD" bulbs which are actually just plain triphosphor bulbs. I have nothing against the standard triphosphor, I use them on my plants, but you certainly don't want to pay $15 a bulb for them.
