Getting Ready

Hello,
I'm about to start getting ready to get my basement for some planting under lights...I will be starting tomatoes, cucumbers (maybe) and peppers...i have a few questions:
1. What kind of bulbs are the best?
2. How long should I set up the timer to run with the lights on?
3. Should I start them indoors about 6 weeks before the last frost date of the season?
4. Need a good reputable website to purchase seeds from...bought seed packets from Lowe's last year, but the germination rate wasn't that high on the peppers or cucumbers.

Thank you,
Doc

1. What kind of bulbs are the best?

2-bulb florescent fixtures with T-8 cool white bulbs (4100k) work well for seedlings.

2. How long should I set up the timer to run with the lights on?

16-18 hours per day.

3. Should I start them indoors about 6 weeks before the last frost date of the season?

Yes. Most seed packets come with instructions on how far in advance to sow before plant out.

4. Need a good reputable website to purchase seeds from...bought seed packets from Lowe's last year, but the germination rate wasn't that high on the peppers or cucumbers.

Try parkseed.com. If you are not satisfied with your purchase from Parks, they will make it right!

Regards,

Rokal
