Your thoughts on T5 fluorescents and the AeroGarden sold by QVC

OK ..this is a two-fold posting b/c it deals with two different things.

1) I was wondering if ANY of you have bought the AeroGarden sold by QVC and others and is it successful? It is rather expensive (it seems) but might be worth it it it actually works and maybe I can save mymoney and buy it some day if that's the case. Here's a link to the aero garden below.

2) I recently learned from someone at Lowes that the T5 is better than the T8 fluorescent lights b/c it is brighter.. just wondering if anyone has actually used these also. I have another post labeled "NEW to Indoor gardening" or something such as that that talked about my setting up a countertop kitchen garden using a grow light and was informed to take that back and buy a fluorescent light which I will do today ...but I am leaning toward buying the T5 light since it is brighter and uses less power. Also, I can't use larger than a 24" fixture and they are hard to find... couldn't find the T8's in a 24" fixture but did find T12's and the T5's.

I appreciate your thoughts on this! Thanks!

The AeroGarden is just a light setup that uses a specialized fluorescent bulb. Here are my thoughts based on what I've seen from your link...

The pros...
-it incorporates an aeroponic (a type of hydroponics system) at the base, so you don't have to play around with dirt; helps to keep area clean.
-it looks nice.
-easy way to play with a hydroponics system.
-easy to grow... just add water & nutrients once in a while
-It'll work

The cons...
-special bulbs mean that you'll have to rely on them for replacements, so if they ever go under...
-expensive bulb replacement; $19.95 ea.
-nutrients will cost you $14.94 every 3 months (you can't use regular fertilizer since it's a hydroponic system)
-whole system is expensive

T5 lights are one of the latest lights out there and are very efficient. I only recomended the T8 to you on the other thread because they are usually more common. In terms of efficiency, the difference between T5's and T8's are pretty close, but T5 replacement bulbs tend to be more expensive because they are newer. If T5's are whats available in your area, then go with it. =)

Thanks cccl... that is interesting on the aeroGarden ... I probably won't go for that later if my set-up works for me... why fix it if it isn't broken as they say!

I'm buying the T5s tonight! Thanks so much.
