Metal Halide Lights and Older Transplanting

I just acquired a 400w metal halide light and plan on using it to grow tomato, eggplant, pepper plants 2-4 months before transplanting outside. Also plan on growing salad greens and herbs indoors at the same time.

Are there any tricks to getting something out of transplanting more fully grown plants. Will growing these plants under the metal halide lights just mess up the flowering later and negate any benefits of starting them earlier?? Are there specific strains of the various plants I mentioned that work better for older transplants??

I know it's a lot of questions but I'd appreciate any input at this point. Thanks folks.
