Position of Lights

I started some seeds about 10 days ago and the dome is off and plants are under a 65 watt "grow" flood light. The fixture is a clamp light and I don't have room to put the light directly above the plants. The light is on the side, pointed down at about a 45 degree angle towards the plants and about 12 inches away. Do you think this works or should I find another location and put the light directly above the plants?
Also, I read where you should put fluorescent light a few inches above the plants. Does this apply to "grow" lights. The bulb package said to keep the bulb at least 12 inches away.

| Definitely do NOT put an incandescent light directly over the seedlings, they'll fry in a heartbeat. If they're not getting any natural light, they may end up leaning toward the light, but that will become obvious fairly quickly. If it happens then, yes, try to put them somewhere you can put the lamp directly overhead. As to how close to put the lamp, it's a tradeoff. Closer will give the plants more light, but also more heat. To start with, use the back of your hand, held there for 15-20 seconds, as rough guide. If it feels affirmatively warm after that time, it'll probably get too hot for the plants. Good ventiliation (a fan in the vicinity, not pointing directly at the seedlings) will help control heat buildup. |

| Let me add for clarity that the first time I wrote "directly above," I wasnt talking about the angle but the distance! |
