Hi, i got some 2 ft. Phillips gro lights for free, so i made some fixtures and decided to try to start some perenneials indoors.
I have an old plastic water basin with a piece of copper on the bottom, and the flats are on top with about 12 inches to the lights. I keep the lights on about 14 hrs. a day.
I am starting echinacea, gaillardia, indian summer BES. I got everything done on Wednesday night and looked Saturday and the Gaillardia and BES are already showing green! Talk about quick! Is this usual? Hope i'm not starting too early.

Great. Do you have a picture of your creation?
I am also in zone 6 and will start my seeds this weekend.
I do not think there is something like "too early, as long as you have the space to accommodate the plants during their "growing season" till it's warm enough to put them outside.
I have started seeds before inside without any problems.
