need a houseplant for basement

Hello,

I am looking for an easy to take care of houseplant that I could hang from the beams in the basement in order to maybe improve air quality down there. We just have small typical basement windows, so there isn't really any light down there, even on a sunny day. At my work we have Golden Pothos that seem to grow like champs indoors, but they also have a constant supply of fluorescent lights overhead. My questions is a two part....#1. Would a Golden Pothos be good for my basement scenario? Keeping in mind I have a young son, so I don't want anything that could be poisonous if accidentally ingested.

#2. I assume I will have to have some sort of supplemental light shining on the plant since there is absolutely no light down there during the day. I would be able to clip like a single bulb type light fixture to one of the wood beams....but I am also concerned about heat output......the thought of fires scare me greatly, so I am leery of leaving a bulb on all day that will get really hot.

Is there anything I can do in my scenario? Thanks.
