CFB and dimmer switches

I picked up a 40W CFL to do duel duty as a reading/houseplant supplemental light. I loved how it brightened the room. The fixture I used is wired to a dimmer switch. When I turn it on the switch area made a humming sound. (I didn't realize this right away because of a noisy household:) )I figure the hum is not good and have put the incandescent back into the fixture. Also, read the package later and found out I wasn't supposed to use the CFL with a dimmer. Oops.

Do you think I have damaged anything in the household wiring by running the CFL for about 30 minutes?

Was the humming merely annoying or was it part of a dangerous situation?

I have other ways to supplement the light for my houseplants and will not use this method again until the switch gets changed to no longer have the dimmer. Just wondering if or what kind of damage may have been done.
