Hallogen Lights? Also a ? about shop light fixture

I searched & couldn't find any info. Will they be OK? I have some under the cabinet light fixtures installed in my kitchen with hallogen bulbs. I just sowed some perennials/annuals and kept them under the lights mainly for warmth. To my surprise, most have started to germinate within a few days! Can I move the germinated flats closer to the fixtures for growth?

My other question is about the shop lights. I can only find them in 48" length. My shelves are 36". Can I use those under the cabinet cheapies that come in smaller widths? If not, I'm wondering if my current set up w/the hallogens will just have to do.

Of course there's always natural sunlight in a room with south & west facing windows.

What do you think?

Thank you in advance.

Nope, not OK, don't use halogens. Too much warmth, not enough light. If you move the trays closer you'll fry them, if you don't move them closer they'll get leggy and fall over.

You can use the shorter fluorescents (must be fluorescents, not incandescent strip lights) if that's all that will fit. I don't like them because shorter tubes give out less light and cost more than 48" tubes, and I resent that :)

Natural sunlight is always best if you have it ;)

Thank you shrubs n bulbs. I really appreciate the quick response. I'll get my little ones away from the hallogens.

It's not sunny here this weekend (it's snowing). Would the seedlings still be better off in a window?
