growing plants from seed to sell in NYC

I am currently growing lots of plants in my apartment in Queens, NY. I recently moved here from upstate NY and greatly miss growing plants outdoors! I am wanting to sell plants, probably just on a table outside my apartment in May or June, but i'm not sure which type of plants would sell best. Does anyone have any ideas what 'city folk' like to grow? Thanks!

Have you looked into the legal implications? Are you registered and certified to grow and sell plants commercially in New York State? Even as a very small scale operation, you must be registered and certified.

Here is a link that might be useful: New York State Dept. of Agriculture and Markets

You can get a good idea of what sells by checking out the farmers' markets in New York, especially the one that is held in Union Square (14th Street on the 4-5-6 subway lines) on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday each week. The farms present vary depending on the day. (The Saturday market is the largest.)

Houseplants of all types are probably your best bet. Philodendron and pothos would be an easy place to start. You could try putting out some tomato starts for people who want to grow tomatoes in containers on balconies or fire escapes. Once you're out there, you can ask people what else they'd like to see.

I wouldn't worry too much about agriculture inspectors swooping down on your building in Queens. But set up your table so that it doesn't completely block pedestrian traffic, and be prepared to pack up if a cop hassles you about peddling without a permit. If that happens, you may want to find a community garden and pool your resources for a plant sale. Joining a community garden would be a great way for you to do some outdoor gardening, too.
