Lights of America

Has anyone else had a problem with the Lights of America Shop light. I came home with two plant and aquarium bulbs and one was not working. For two day the light worked fine with only one bulb in. Now that I have two bulbs in it will only stay on for 10 minutes before it shuts off.

Return the unit if you can. It may be that the unit is shutting down because of a problem. Instead of shutting down, it may ignite if the overload protector fails to open. chuck

We bought their florescent spots for our kitchen instead of halide spots so they would last longer and be cooler.

Had a lot of problems with them burning out much sooner than expected.

I returned the light and got a new one. It works good so far 3 days of use. I think when I buy my second light I may get a more expensive one from a better retailer.

I just bought the same ones. If they fail I will definitely return them and go to Home Depot for better ones. I figured it couldn't hurt to try them out if they were cheaper and closer to home!

I have purchased 8 of them over the past several months and so far not a single one has failed (running 18/6).
I pulled the ballasts out of half of them to make 4 overdriven fixtures.

I know nothing about lights. What is the ballast> and how and why do you overdrive it?

RE: Lights of America

In this case, each fixture uses one ballast to drive two tubes (the ballast provides the proper voltage and current to the tubes). I rewire them so that each ballast drives one tube instead of two and effectively pushes more current through the tube to produce more light.

If you read further down in this forum you see threads about overdriving fluorescents that go into more detail.

It's really only necessary if you need more light but don't have room to physically add more bulbs or fixtures.
