The bulb should be an O-rated bulb if it is to be used in an open fixture. Confirm the bulb type before you use it. Non-open-rated bulbs are a UV, fire, and exploding hot glass risk when used without a shield.

You should also check that your bulb is designed to be operated in the position you need. Some will operate in any position, but some must be horizontal and some must be vertical.

Actually, I got up this morning and looked at the hood / reflector and said to myself, my eyes are worth more to me than the extra money to upgrade to a better rig. Returned the open reflector and paid the extra for one with a tempered glass shield.

The sales guy said I really didn't need to spend the extra money but, I feel better with the extra safety.

It's all together now and I'm going to mount it after dinner. Boy, my pepper seedlings are just going to love the light!
