Cheap 48 x 30 or 18 shelves?

Posted by brazenspider 5 (My Page) on

I'm looking for cheap 48W shelves. I want to make the best use of the shop lights I have, but I can't seem to find a 48W shelve system for less than $80. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a cat that likes to eat plants, so I'd prefer at least a 4 shelf system. Thanks in advance! I found a similar post from 2005, but I can't find any of the products mentioned in that thread.

Look for businesses going out of business or bankruptcy auctions. Craigslist or the Recycler are often full of ads for shelving.

I bought mine from Lowes, they had it in silver finish and black they are 48"wide shelves. It works great!

Great looking shelves, thanks for the link. I'm making do w/ the 36''x60'' plywood sitting on top of shelving in my pantry. When I move, that'll be at the top of my list.

The green epoxy coated NSF certified wire shelves are designed for wet or damp areas, and would be a better choice except for being more expensive. A place in La Palma, California is having a clearance sale on them right now and you can get them cheaper than the chrome or black units, even though the green are normally more expensive. I just bought four shelving units for about 40% of the normal price. I think the forest green color looks better with plants too.

They're used, but in "good" condition. NSF rated for both indoor and outdoor, and 18" x 47.5" (almost your 48") and $65 + shipping (that's annoying!) but they are SUPER sturdy (rated to 600lbs per shelf)

I have a basement and garage full of the Lowe's shelves.
If you go to your post office, they should have a "Movers Packet" which includes 10% off at Lowes.

Lowes often has these on sale for less as well.

I'm using the white version of these.

They easily fit 2 4' shop lights on each tier. I also get a sheet of plywood cut down each season to stop water overflows/misses from dripping right down on top of the lights below. I use the top tier for storage and typically the bottom tier for my heated seedling starter pads.

Additionally, from Walmart I have a big bag of mylar sheets - the kind they hand out to runners after a race. I drap these over the front/back/sides to reflect as much light back at the plants as possible.

While the shelves are adjustable, I've never gone back and changed a level.

If someone has a clever way of hanging shop lights on this (or other) shelf system, I'd love to hear about it. I'm using chains and S-hooks and have on several occassions had them slip while I'm moving lights up or down and had them crash on plants (thus killing several plants on each attempt). A cheap and simple "Venetian Blind" system would be great.

Uh,

Buy a 4'x8'x.5" piece of particle board.

Particle board???? What do you want to do with particle board?

If you're suggesting using it to make shelves, that's got to be one of the worst ideas ever. Particle board will melt if it gets wet (how likely is THAT if it's got plants on top of it) and it sags under minimal weight (and how much weight is on a 4' long shelf full of plants, soil, water, and pots).

Avoid particle board. Almost anything would be better.

Lowes or HD has those heavy-duty plastic shelves for about $59 (last week price). They look pretty sturdy.
