Growing under Lights

Using top of flourecent fixtures as a heating source

I am starting vegetables and flowers under 4 ft 32wt8 lights. I have more flats then light space. Is it safe and or suitable to place them on top of the florescent light fixtures to get them to sprout? Or is this to warm? I was thinking about doing this while the ones that have sprouted are under the lighting. Anyone else do this? If I recall, I done this or read about it years ago, but I could be wrong.

I do that. Be real sure that your flats won't leak water on the fixtures though.

Unless you like have your hair stand on end, that's okay then.

Look for an area atop the fixture that's pleasantly warm (I'd avoid the few hot spots). You want to encourage sprouting, not cook the seeds.

I do this also, without any problems. It still took about 3 weeks for the peppers to germinate. Good luck with it.
