any good light meters?

I've read posts where people have measured the light output of their set ups. I purchased a light meter at Home Depot and was disappointed to learn it doesn't read fluorescent light at all. Actually within one inch of the bulb it tips the scale at 2000 ft/cdls but at 3 inches it's zero. The manufacturer told me that it's a problem with the circuitry or something and to use the meter to read sunlight only.

I want a light meter that can read fl light and that is cheapish, under 30 bucks, preferably way under. Any ideas?

I think they're scamming you, trying to make excuses for their rubbish product. Would you let a camera manufacturer tell you their camera doesn't work inside because "it's a problem with the circuitry or something" and to only use it in sunlight? BTW, I use my camera as a light meter, not very accurate because you can only read to the nearest f-stop, but at least I can get readings from fluorescent lights, LOL.

I suspect the light meter actually reads infrared because it likes the sun but also has a penchant for low powered incandescent bulbs also. I would return it (I still might) but it has a water meter and a ph meter for 7 bucks so unless I find something better I'll just have to sacrafice. I need the water meter for hard to reach and large pots (and since I have no growing instincts whatsoever). The PH meter is more of a novelty since houseplants will grow in almost any PH range. Maybe not as well, but I just want them to live, rapid growth isn't needed.

How do you use your camera. I have a very simple camera. I could see if it wants to flash or not but that doesn't tell me a whole lot.
