Yes, you can use this, but there are some things to be aware of. The clear stripe allows some of the mercury emission spectrum to emerge directly. This gives increased light output at 405nm and 436nm, not a real problem (also extra UV output but little of it gets through the glass). The light output is also extremely intense and directional, which is actually the reason they are made this way. You will need to mount the lights further away from the plants to avoid burning them, but should still use a reflector since light is emitted at all angles, just more strongly from the stripe. Also they are relatively inefficient, with 10%-20% of the output not being converted to visible light relative to a normal tube. Otherwise they are a completely normal fluorescent tube.

I guess what I was hoping for was if there would be any noticable benefit from the more intense light in an enclosed area ( 8ft long X 6ft wide X 7ft tall. If these are not likely to improve growing conditions over typical flourescents, it may not be worth the effort of switching them all around. Thanks for the help.
