Using a light stand to overwinter favorite outdoor plants

My gardening in the last 4 or so years has relied heavily on winter sowing of seeds outdoors (LOVE it) and my four tier light stand has sat unused in the basement.

As I walked through my gardens and patio pots this morning, looking at all the beautiful plants that are robust now but will soon go with the frost, I thought about making some cuttings or even lifting whole plants and bringing them indoors. I tried last year with some coleus and had only one make it through on a window sill. And then I remembered the light stand!

Any advise on using a light stand over winter? it seems like many months to have anything "plugged in" - is the energy use prohibitive? What temperature room is best? I can put it in the basement (50-60 degree range) or in an unused bedroom (60-70 degree range. Any thoughts/advise on the plants I'd like to bring in :

tuberous begonis, fancy coleus, geraniums, new gen. impatiens, caladiums.

Love to hear from anyone who has tried this!!!

Thanks,

Nancy
