Griwing low light plants under HID

I have been growing under lights for some time, but have always wondered about something. For plants that can not tolerate direct sun, or that would prefer shade......can these handle HID lights(MH or HPS). Is there a difference when growing under HID rather than the sun.....I know the the different ways plants grow under each of these types of lights such as MH for vegetative growth, whereas HPS for flowering, but I am mainly asking about low light plants tolerating high amounts light but from HID lights, not the sun.

Thanks

If you put them far enough away from the HID you'll be fine. But why would you pay for a pricey HID light for low light plants? There are cheaper ways to go (windows, fluorescents). I guess if you already have the HID light, just put the low light plants off to the side.

Yes, light is light, whatever the source. As long as the fixture is far enough away (pretty far, 5-6 feet for a 400W), it'd work fine, and is certainly a lot more esthetically pleasing IMO than banks of fluorescent lights close to the plants. I'd think it'd be of best use for larger or taller, medium light tropicals (things that want to be shrubs or trees in the wild) than for smaller, true "shade" plants, though.
