Is it fluorescent -- the long kind? It is most likely very similar to the T5 bulbs that you buy so it's the right KIND of light but not super "strong." if it emits heat, then you need it fairly close if you want that heat to help start seeds... funny but you can read a lot about plant lighting on the websites for people who grow Mary Jane. Now it's legal in WA a lot of people are buying and selling their equipment online.

I think they help a little. My momma won't let me grow Mary Jane:( Stupid Kansas law.

Unfortunately you seedlings are already becoming leggy from not having enough light. You can see how some are leaning towards the closest light. Those lights are barely adequate and to be so need to be directly over your plants and about 1-2" above them. Reflectors would also really help.

Yeah you're right SCG I was just working with what I had for that shelf/rack thing and boards. I'm going to get a smaller table and move the lights closer together when I get around to it.

You can hang a real fluorescent fixture off the same boards. Home Despot has a 4' fixture for $15 (dual T8 bulbs).

Just make sure the "boards" are stable so they won't fall on the plants if it gets kicked or jostled!

Get 6500K Daylight bulbs, 32W, T8, you'll need 2 of them. I buy mine 10 at a time but you can get them in pairs.

So you're growing cacti and what else there? Clearly not Mary Jane, LOL! Stupid most state laws!

Orchid seedlings! The healthy ones are Monk Orchids. The ones in the back that don't look right are Encyclias. The pot that just looks like dirt has a couple Kona Coffee seeds in it but most of the seeds I got didn't even germinate so I don't have my hopes up.
