best flourescent light for seed starting

i have a 48 inch grow light that i am planning to start veggie seed under. the light fixture came with two bulbs, i dont know what brand or type though. i have heard that the ge plant/aquarium bulb is good, but, i wanted to get a few opinions. how far from plants does light need to be. any info would be greatly appreciated

I'd just get a couple of daylight bulbs and stick it as close as possible without touching

JDS,

I would choose fluorescent bulbs with a 6500Â°K color rating. That is very cool white light. I would do that because my seedlings have preferentially leaned toward the cooler white bulbs when different bulbs were overhead.
