Is there any hope??

I have lilies that grow wild on the side of my house. Last year the city dug them up to lay new pipes and I was sure they were permanently gone. Within the last week I noticed they had reappeared and had split by themselves and I was so excited. Well, yesterday my landscaper took it upon himself to take a weedwacker to them and the were chopped with about 1/3 of the stalks above ground. My question is, are they salvageable? If so, should I dig them up and replant them in a deep window box of some sort or should I leave them as they are and hope for the best?

Do you know what kind of lilies you have? If they're the orange "ditch lilies" (hemerocallis fulva) they should be fine and just keep growing and eventually bloom. Do yours sprout from a bulb or a tangle of tuberous roots?

If they're true lilium (from a bulb) and the growth tip has been whacked off, they won't do anything this season - probably not even put out more leaves. But the bulb should be able to replenish itself with what is left of the stem and be okay a year from now... which will give you the time to tell your gardener to leave them alone.
