new growth on oriental lily

I received an oriental lily for my anniversary in december. It did good for about two weeks and then all of the blooms died even the ones that did not open. The leaves fell off and the stems are dieing back. I was going to cut it back and store it untill spring to plant it in the yard but now there is growth at the bottom of one of the stems. Should i cut back the stems and how should i care for it through the winter. Our yard is sand will that be ok to plant the lily?
