She's right, they are Tiger Lilies (lilium lancifolium). There are other types of lilies in many other colors.

Something you should be aware of........tiger lilies are host plants/carriers of lily mosaic virus. While they are apparently immune to the problem, they can transmit the disease to other lily varieties (via insect vectors) and it can be fatal. It is usually cautioned to plant tiger lilies well away from any other type.

gardengal, thanks for bringing that up, I should have included it. If I remember correctly, it's suggested there be a minimum of 100ft. between tigers and other lilies.

Thanks for that info...since you'd given me the name, I've been looking it up, and saw that. Luckily, I have them planted away from the house. Out in the "wilderness" of my woods area, along the pastureline/treeline. So hopefully this issue only affects other lilies! I do have some "ditch" lilies planted on each side of my driveway, where we have a culvert, but no tiger lilies near there...and along the side of the house last year, I planted some yellow ones a friend gave me. But no tigers near there either. So glad, not knowing then, I kept them away anyway!

Streaking and/or mottling of the leaves and leaf distortion are symptoms. Plants that show symptoms should be destroyed but don't confuse it with botrytis which affects the leaves but does not infect the bulb.
As long as we're talking virus' I know many people keep their Easter Lilies and plant them out. I would have to do a search to find the extension bulletin that talks about it.. but it strongly suggests discarding your Easter Lilies as almost all are infected with Lily Symptomless Virus.

"Ditch lilies" are a common name for daylilies and there is no relation between these and true lilies, so these are immune to lily viruses, are not carriers and can be planted wherever you like.

hostaholic, apparently genetic engineering has now resulted in virus-free Easter lily bulbs. Since this is a huge floraculture market and a big cash crop - right behind poinsettias - I guess they (whoever 'they' are) felt it was economically reasonable to devote the funds and science in developing a virus-free strain.

Interesting, this must be a very recent development. As of 2 or 3 years ago I received info from the U of Mn extension saying almost all were infected. Can you you direct me to a link/ article etc.? I would love to read it.
