Perfectly normal, especially for spring planted lilies, to have 1-2 inch sprouts. It's really the signal to plant ASAP!! The only negative thing about having the sprouts is they can easily break when you handle them. So, be very careful because this sprout is this year's flowers!!

Also, leaving them unplanted for too long tends to stunt the growth and, perhaps, stress the bulb as the new shoot is relying solely on the bulb for nurishment and moisture to develop. Remember, lily bulbs are NEVER fully dormant like tulips or daffodils.

I like to amend my garden soil with a lot of organic matter such as compost or peat and I also sprinkle a little bone meal during planting. I apply a 5-10-10 fertilizer when the lily shoots are a few inches above ground and apply again after they bloom later in the summer to help feed the bulbs as they begin to make reserves for the following summer's blooms!
