Mystery: lilies 'rest' for a year?

This is my "mystery": things you wonder about when itÂs too cold to actually do any gardening! Last spring I bought a bunch of asiatic bulbs in early May on clearance. Once I opened the packages some were good, some were so-so and some I thought were complete duds. But I heeled in the "duds" anyway under the shadow of a gigantic persicaria polymorpha where I couldnÂt plant anything anyway. I saw absolutely no growth above ground from these guys at all last year.

Well: itÂs spring 2008, and in the space around the persicaria what should pop up but lilies! They managed to live for a year with no growth on top to create food. I have to think they were making SOME roots down there. IÂm tempted to move them (the persicaria crowds out everything) but think theyÂve had enough stress. I'll wait til fall.

Where thereÂs life thereÂs hope!
