Plant a Lily, Kill a lily...

NooooooÂÂ..!!!

I planted some new oriental lilies last evening. On the very first one, I selected a spot about 8 inches away from an existing lily. First shovelful of dirt, fine: second: resistance. When I pulled it up I saw that I had sliced through a bulb! Silly lily had sent up its stem quite a distance from the bulb. I know they DO do that, but why??? There was nothing in the way that it had to skirt around, and there are no rocks in this raised bed. IÂm pretty sure it was another oriental, too (why couldnÂt have been an asiatic? IÂve got plenty of those): all the older ones are about 3 years old.

I wonder if part of it will live. The sliced off part was maybe a third cut off the bulb. Stem and the rest of the bulb is intact. Will the scales grow? I tucked back the cut part into the soil.

SighÂ.
