Dying Stargazers

I have never grown lilies before and figured I'd give it a try this year. I don't know what (if anything) I'm doing wrong. I planted them in a sunny location with late afternoon shade. The soil is well drained..I think. I water every other day since its been dry here. I planted 10 and 9 came up. 4 have had the following problem; after they got to be about an inch or two out of the ground they turned black and it almost looks as though they were rotting. I cut the rotten portion off of one to see what would happen, but the stem has turned brown and I think it is going to die. :( The other 5 seem to be fine. What could be causing this black rotting "stuff?" Thanks for your help!
