I grow some in pots and some in the ground. Pots are fine as long as you have good drainage so they won't rot.

yes, the longer you keep them in packages the worse off you'll be.

Whenever I see packaged bulbs for 50% off or more, they are usually in really bad shape, either dried up and/or mouldy.
