They are perfectly perennial in your zone. I'd say 8" is a little too deep for a first year plants. Lilies have "muscles" in their roots; they can pull themselves down later. That is why a shallow planting is safer than a deep one. Anyway, they should be at least 1'-2' tall at this time. The Lilies I bought from Brent&Becky's 50% off sale are about 1' tall now. I planted them on Memorial day.

I would carefully dig one of the bulbs and see what happened. If the bulb is firm and does not have rotten parts, it is fine. They might stay dormant this year because of the deep planting.
