Did scaling work for you?

I tried a few Asiatics last year. I'm reporting my results.

Bulbs cut in half or fourths then dusted with fungicide then replanted in the garden did not yield anymore plants than if I left them alone to multiply on their own. In fact I would have done better if I had left them alone.

I'm curious to hear from others who have done this using the ground for the replant location.

Hi Karen,
I'm not surprised by your results......with lily bulbs you cannot just cut them. You need to peel the layers of the bulb back and break them off.....making sure to get a small piece of the bottom end where the roots grow from.
You do not have to plant them in vermiculite....you can simply dust them and plant along side your other bulbs....just not quite as deep.

When I have scaled my lilies I find it works pretty well. Let's say I start with one big bulb. I break it in half or thirds and make sure they all have roots (like Flora mentioned). I usually find that the big bulbs break apart VERY easily down the middle - like they want to be split! The I replant both. That year I'll have 2 pretty good plants that will probably both bloom decently...though the plants will be more skimpy then when it was one bulb. The next year each plant will have mutiplied to have 2-3 plants each. That seems good to me!

Personally, I like to leave my lilies where they are to really get nice and big before I divide, but scaling is a good way to get more plots started without having to go out and track down more bulbs or plants.

Not by my choice, but last Spring The Squirrels dug out and scaled Three of My Asiatics, I was very upset!!!! Anyway I collected all three piles of scales to Dump??? Then I thought what the H--l I shoved each pile in a six by six dollar days woven basket and left them for the summer in a shady spot needless to say nothing happenend!!!

in the fall one 6"X6" basket I placed in a hole in the ground and left it the other Two I over wintered in my Garage, (I just have to try and save every thing) and brought them out this spring they now have about a dozen baby lilys in them BUT the one I buried, has about 40 (thats how many we can count) new plants it is chaotic so now we shall have to try and get it out of the ground in the fall ,split the basket and repot all the new baby plants!!! Any one want some some really determined,strong little lilys LOL
