Are Easter lilies in the garden tall?

Last yearÂs Easter lily has just started to bloom. It was planted out in the garden right after the flowers faded (maybe April?) last spring. But to my surprise it is quite short, maybe 18 inches, and lost amid the other asiatics and orientals surrounding it. I had thought that Easter lilies were induced to grow short for sale as potted plants and would revert to a taller plant once allowed to grow normally outdoors. Is this incorrect? Or do I need to give it another year for it to achieve some height?
