Planted Too Late?

I had some casa blanca lilies bought at the end of June that I only got planted today - 7/22. They were well sprouted, with stems about 4 inches long and some feathered leaves at the top. I know - mea culpa. I just read that I probably should have just tossed them on the compost. Should I not count on them and plant something else in their spot?

Who knows you might get lucky.
""toss them on the compost"" wouldn't get much compost out of it anyway and it will become compost in the ground too. Sprinkle crushed egg shells around it and shield from direct sunlight if the day gets too hot..
Similar happened to a Daylily I bought, then the slugs got to it and the whole thing just vanished. I didn't do either.
