Stargazer? Or lily by any other name?

I've lost track of what lilies I have in my garden, and am on a mission to identify those that have survived gopher onslaughts. Most of the remaining lilies are now planted in gopher cages, but I've lost track of what is what. Over the years I've bought lilies from several sources, among them B&D, the Lily Garden, and Old House Gardens.

Right now a lily is blooming in my garden that looks an awful lot like the popular Stargazer. Now it could actually be Stargazer. I planted it once, though I don't recall ever seeing it bloom, and I lost track of where it was. It's about the right height, and this is the right time for it to be blooming. The problem is that I understand that the characteristic feature of Stargazer is that the bloom faces upward. These all face outward, not upward.

Could it still be Stargazer?

Don't know if this will help or not, but I recently posted a question about my pink/white lily (see link below--pics 3 & 4). Does your lily look like it? I'm not sure of the name of mine, but I'm pretty sure it is not Stargazer. I think it is an Oriental lily and maybe it is "Dizzy." It does face outward, as you described yours, and the pink does not extend out as close to the edges as I remember Stargazer doing.

At least that will give you something to compare to.

Kate, thanks. I actually figured mine out. It is Lilium rubrum, one of the parents of Stargazer. It looks a great deal like it but faces down, not upwards. I had bought it some time ago from Old House Gardens. I move things around and gophers eat bulbs, so I tend to lose track of what I have. Now these lilies are in a gopher cage, so I think they are as safe as I can reasonably make them.

I love my rubrums even more than 'Stargazers'. Love those upside down blooms and 'Black Beauty' is even better.
