Something digging/eating bulbs

Posted by junco1102 5 (My Page) on

Last year I planted lilies that came up this spring and bloomed beautifully. Recently I noticed that there are large holes around the lilies and some of the lilies appeared to be chopped off. I think that ground squirrels, or maybe squirrels are digging and eating the bulbs. The lilies are planted in different gardens all around my yard, and this seems to have happened to all of them. When I notice the holes, I push the dirt back over the top, but I am afraid that I am going to lose all of these lilies. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Junco

RE: Something digging/eating bulbs

Hey,
I have the same problem. And I planted a bunch more bulbs just recently. Someone said put down gravel since they don't like to dig thru gravel, but I don't if that really works. I never had this problem until this year, and I do notice a lot of squirrels and chipmunks in the last few years. I don't like trap or kill them. We have a big snow fall in winter, so I wouldn't want to reapply something too frequently.

Someone please reply. What else can I do?

Hi: I just planted some lily bulbs and I put pieces of chicken wire over the top. I'm hoping the squirrels will avoid it and stay away from the bulbs. They seem to want to dig in places where the soil has been disturbed. I also planted them about 9" down. Just another idea that might work.

I have had the same thing. they dig up the bulb and place it beside the hole then dig a little deeper. i replanted mine and then placed a brick on top of it, which I plan to remove before rtime for the bulbs to sprout a plant. so far its working.I was told its racoons digging them up, looking for grub worms.
