Has anyone grown the Himilayan Lily? This is supposed to get like 12 feet high with hundreds of white blooms? I heard it takes 3-4 years to flower. Anyone?
I don't know anyone up here who has grown Crinums, but it has crossed my mind to try. If you do, try to research for any of the more cold hardy strains/clones/species. I would think it's a bit of a stretch here, but you never really know until you try.
Hmmm...Lilium_Guy must be talking about Cardiocrinum giganteum.
It can certainly reach 12-15 feet when it finally flowers. From seed, it can take around 7 years to flower, but if you purchase well grown plants and young bulbs, they typically will flower in 2-4 years.
When you have multiple plants you can have hundreds of blooms, but a single stem carries between 3-20 on a mature stem.
I recommend purchasing plants at different sizes and ages for a succession of blooms each year. Also, keep in mind that the Giant Himalayan Lily is "monocarpic", meaning that the main bulb dies off after it flowers. However, it will leave baby bulblets that will eventually mature and flower in a few years!
