Conflicting instructions

I am about to enter the world of tall trumpet lilies for the first time. I've been informed that the bulbs I ordered are on the way,so I started looking at planting instructions in my garden books and on-line; I found wildly different recommendations: from 4 to 12 inches deep, from 6 to 18 inches apart. Can some of you experienced lily growers please help me out with what works in the real world?

I've got good soil, good drainage, lots of room, and lots of sun, so however they go in, they should be happy, but how deep do they go? I hope not to have to divide them any too soon, so I thought 10 inches apart would be good, but is that enough room between the bulbs?

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated; I really want to do well by these bulbs, but I need guidance. Thank you in advance for your help.

Joan
