where to plant Lilium pumilum?

I just found a package of red Lilium Pumilum in a garden center. This was quite a surprise! They've been on my wish list for a while.

Can I plant these under deciduous trees? They would get sun for a few hours each day, morning; dappled shade after that; not dense shade.

I have not had much success with pumilum (or cernuum a closely related lily). I think my heavy clay, even amended, it too much for their little bulbs.

So I can tell you what doesn't work:

Don't plant deep, (just a couple inches).
No heavy soil. (I'm moving mine into pots with potting soil, if that doesn't work I'm tossing them).

I've heard they like sunny spots and really don't like to be wet in the late summer. But, I haven't had enough success to confirm that.

Good Luck, and if they work out for you post to the forum next spring. I'd love to grow either of these successfully since they are early and have fragrance.
