I move my lilies around all the time :-) At this time of year, I'd cut the stalks back but leave 3-4 inches remaining above ground. I've discovered this is the best way to mark where the bulbs are planted so that I do not disturb or damage them when doing any other late season chores or transplanting. The remaining portions of stalk will just rot away over the winter or by the time the new shoots emerge in spring.

After re-reading my initial post, I see I wasn't real clear. I've already twisted off most of the stalks. The dry ones snapped right off. But others still seemed damp and not ready but I forcibly twisted them off anyway.

With the dry stalks, the bulb is more or less "sealed up" inside. But with others, I worry that I've left them vulnerable due to the "hole" that was left from stalk. Not to be gross, but the only way I can explain my concern is -- like picking off a scab before it's ready and you're still raw underneath. I worry that the inside of those bulbs are "raw" and suseptible to water and rotting.

I used to worry about rainwater getting down into the bulbs through the holes that the dried stalks left. I quit worrying when I realized that the lily bulbs seemed to survive this minor trauma just fine. If the stalks don't come away from the bulb easily, don't pull or twist them. Just use your pruners to cut the stalks off at 3-4" just like "gardengal" said. They will wither away in their own time. Plant (or transplant) the bulbs with the 3-4" stalks left on if necessary.

You don't need to, but if you are concerned just plant the bulbs on their sides....this eliminates the water sitting in the bulb. Another option is to dust them with bulb dust to help eliminate rot issues, however, these bulbs are tough and unless you get excessive rain it shouldn't be a problem.

AH HA!! Thanks Flora. Why didn't I think of that? Sideways !!! Great idea, esp. since I noticed some of my huge ones had been growing that way all along AND we are getting excessive rain right now and it will probably go on for awhile. I ended up getting rained out yesterday and didn't get one thing in the ground. :o(
