Storing Lily bulbs

Can you store lily bulbs in the refrigerator? Last year I planted lilies in October and because we had a mild winter they all came up in January. We had a few freezing temp that just enough to ruin the buds. I'm planning to get more but I will wait till late December or early Jan to plant them. So is it alright to put them in the fridge?
I noticed at Home Depot that their bulbs disintegrate after a long period of room temperature. |

| Way up NY state here. I wonder if it gets cold enough there for a long enough period of time. Texas can't be that cold. Want to borrow some minus 40 weather??? Dig up your bulbs, place in baggies preferably with a few holes, put in a non-growing medium like ground peat or saw dust (notice what they came in) and store in a freezer for at least 6-8 weeks. You can leave longer without harm. Not shorter. The frig freezer is fine. If its the kitchen frig freezer you probably better put them on the bottom so you don't get saw dust all over the pork chops. Kind of don't taste good with saw dust. They need to be totally frozen under 32 degrees. Are you sure you want to replant them outside in January? That may be too soon if you get a frosty day in march it will kill the new growth. Yes a freezer is fine. Make sure its <32 for at least 6 weeks. Up here thats a warm winter day. If you ever get tired of digging them up you can move here. We get 9 months winter, 2 months mud a 1 month warm spring. And if summer is on a weekend we have a party. Have a nice day. |

Thanks Lilium guy, and yes send me that weather and I need it now. We are still experiencing summerlike weather. Even though we have short winters, it gets cold enough for bulbs to bloom without digging and storing them. What I would like to do is buy the lily bulbs between now and Nov and plant them early Jan. Thanks to your advise, I will just put them in the fridge when they arrive. Nine months winter? I don't think so, I'll just visit in the fall when it is prettiest. |

| Do not put lily bulbs in the freezer. You will kill them all. The refrigerator is OK. |
