native California lilies

We have three beds of Lilium pardilinum, or leopard lilies. They're approx 15 years old and are overcrowded. We dug up a small number yesterday and realized that we didn't really know what we were doing. We broke apart some of the bulbs, making sure that we had roots on each section and planted them in Black Gold Cocoa Blend, which has a lot of coir in it. We also planted some scales in 4 inch pots.

Questions: what planting mix is best used?

How deep should they be planted in gallon or 4 inch pots?

What strategies work for successful propagation of native lilies?

These are beautiful lilies, and we'd be glad to communicate with those who know about propagation of other California natives as well.

PS--we have a greenhouse but have put them in a lath house where they will receive winter rains, abundant here (we had 113 inches last year).
