Planting Oriental Lily bulbs now in my Southern Cali garden?

I just ordered around 100 stargazers and other varieties from Van Engelen since they were on sale. Next month I will be planting my tulip bulbs when I'm done chilling them in my garage refrigderator and would like to plant the lilies at that time also to avoid damaging other bulbs if I plant them later in the year. Would it be okay to plant lily bulbs in January? We get down to around 40 maybe 35 degrees at night, only in the early part before sunrise. I'm just afraid that they will begin sprouting if I wait till spring to plant them. Thanks!

The Stargazers will require about 400 hours of chill/vernalization at a temperature of about 35 degrees F to assure a good bloom next spring. Lilium bulbs dug and sold for Fall planting (which I assume these were) are not prechilled; bulbs shipped in March/April for Spring Planting are prechilled by the seller. So, about a month in the fridge should do. Watch to make sure they stay just a little moist--don't let them dry out because lily bulbs don't have a protective shell like tulips do. And then plant them right along with your tulips. In your zone 9, Stargazers may or may not require an annual refigerator vernalization for a good bloom--see how they flower in 2013; and decide from there. If you have further questions about lilies in particular don't hesitate to ask. Good Luck!

You can keep Lily (or indeed most) bulbs almost indefinitely in the fridge at 2C/36F. This is how florists get them to you flowering at Christmas! They are unlikely to sprout at this low temp and even if they do, growth will be extremely slow. -Ian.

Thank you for the help. I already have some lilies planted from two years ago and they bloom just fine without 400 chills hours. I just went ahead and planted them in small plastic grow containers until I'm ready for planting time. I didn't know thats what florist did!
