LB hydroculture?

The idea of hydroculture (using expanded clay) has been discussed a bit recently on the house plant forum, and I'm wondering whether anyone has tried this with lucky bamboo. I purchased a stalk the other day that was rooted in water, and currently have it still in water. I know they're supposed to do better in coarse soil, so would they be a good fit for the coarse hydroculture medium? I saw a list of suggested plants on one of the hydroculture sites, and several other dracaena were listed, but not this species.
So, before I go out searching for the expanded clay, any thoughts?
