When to trim plant?

I have had a lucky bamboo plant from IKEA for four years. It has grown from the one small shoot that was 6" tall to being a whopping TWO FEET tall now, with three more shoots that have developed in the same pot. I have it in a class holder with rocks, but I noticed today that the tips of the leaves are starting to turn yellow. Could it be that I have too many roots in there? On that note, is it possible to trim the 2' shoot so that I can separate and grow more? It has gotten so tall that it now falls over unless stood up against a wall, and I'd like to prevent it from breaking. Thanks!
