Japanese Maples

I have been buying a lot of mail order Japanese Maples especially the fancy variegated types. I have successfully grown larger less exotic varieties in sheltered spots in my landscape but thus far my fancy little ones I have potted up into 10 gallon nursery pots with miracle growing mix.

During the winter months I store these plants in unheated garage and only turn a little heater on if temperatures start to get below zero.

Questions I would like addressed is how much more vulnerable to cold are the exotic varieties to eventually planting into my landscape. Does plant size affect ultimate cold hardiness?

Any comments on my choice of mix. In the container thread they seem to recommend a less organic mix. I have thought of placing planting maples using pot-in-pot system and then pulling up 2nd pot in winter to again store in winter. Maybe best suggestion is to tell me where to move where it don't get so cold. Thanks in advance
